On Orientalism

My class has delved into discussions of postcolonialism, racism, and oppression of indigenous and minority groups.  As part of our research and discussion we have been watching a number of videos, including the ones below.  Edward Said was a Palestinian-American literary theorist, a founding member of postcolonism, and the author of several books.  He is best known for his book Orientalism, which deals with the ways in which the Orient (and particularly the Islamic Orient) is viewed and shown through a Western lens.

This four part video is a fascinating look at the themes in that classic work.

A nicely laid out blog post that links to a four part documentary on Said’s Orientalism.
